Play was competitive from the first whistle. Both teams challenged for every 50/50 ball determined to win them. The final score was 4-1 Olympians. IMG_9381Olympians are a new team that has recently sprung up through a separation from Athenians SC. They have a strong core of players who took the pitch in the scrimmage. The foundation of signed players includes: Leslie Rios, Ana Campa, Brittney Campa, and Isa Valdez will be joining the team this week. Taking shots is not something they are afraid of, taking them from close range and outside the penalty area. “We want to bring in better teams. We don’t mess around, we have transportation, practice facilities, we had two international matches. We will have more this month,” said Joe Rios co-owner of the Olympians alongside Arturo Fererr. Home games will be played at Warrior Stadium, Cornerstone Christian School, where their brother team San Antonio Corinthians SC plays.
IMG_9387Samba FC had an aggressive, physical style of play. Samba took a solid shot and scored on a keeper error; it deflected off the goalie’s hands as she knelt to pick it up and went right over her shoulder. The score was 0-0 at the end of the first 30-minute period. Samba defense was stout and kept the Olympians at bay shutting down chances. It’s still early in the preseason. As Samba continues to develop and play together more, they will continue to progress. “Proud and happy of our performance. Even though this was our first tactical preseason game. The team did very well since this is the first time they ever played together,” shared Head Coach Augustine Mendez. Raeann Garcia, goalkeeper, played with the Blossoms last season and has signed with Samba for this season. Expect to see her between the posts blocking shots again this season. Hannah Player, Angelica Durland, and Isabella Von Toussaint all have previous experience at the amateur level.
